Leading Progressive
Christian Congregations
in an Interfaith Age

Plymouth Congregational Church of Minneapolis has been a beacon of Progressive Christianity in the Midwest for several generations. Its Center for Progressive Christian Faith (founded in 2004) is rooted in a worshiping congregation widely respected for its liberal pulpit, progressive theology, and advocacy for social justice.  While best known as a regional presence, the Plymouth Center also participates nationally in conversations among Progressive Christian leaders and congregations.

Funded by a generous contribution from the George Family Foundation, the Emerging Leaders Institute is made possible through a close collaboration between the Plymouth Center and The Beatitudes Society, which identifies and equips emerging leaders to grow Progressive Christian faith communities for the sake of justice and the common good.

The work of democracy is about more than simply who is elected to any given civil role: it is about rejoining role with soul, as well as understanding that we all have a role to play in healing the heart of our democracy. This is work for which the church is particularly well suited, and work to which progressive Christian leaders are called.

One of the hallmarks of Progressive Christianity is its insistence that it is one way among many others. Progressive Christians live and move and have their being in a world filled with people of many different religious traditions, and none at all, without operating out of the assumption that our way of being deserves special priority in the civic realm. We lament that this has not always been how Christians have been experienced by others, and we commit ourselves to ways of preaching, teaching and sharing our faith that offer the good news of what we have experienced of God in Christ without assuming that we have the final word on how God is reaching out to those who do not share our experience.
