Lisa Drew, Lucy Rose Fischer display digital and glass art

artists' reception following worship Aug. 10.

Artist’s Statement - Lisa Drew
Passion for hand-blown glass, exquisite forms of architecture and the interplay of color and illumination inspire me to create unique and unusual digital fine art photography. Enhancing my original photographs with various digital interpretations, I translate my visual perceptions into works that express my emotional connection to the image.

I’m generally drawn to modern architecture and the juxtaposition of object and environment. Rather than portray the overall vision of the architect, I prefer to look for details and vignettes that take me outside the concept and into another world, evoking unexpected emotion and vision.

The intense colors of hand-blown glass have almost pushed me into alternate states of being. Again, it’s often the flowing curve of a surface or the tension of two colors merging that inspires me. In my stained glass series, I look for the simple truth of shape and color.

My hope is that these photographs evoke the same level of passionate fixation in you as they do for me.

(Lisa Drew is a visual and performance artist residing in the Camden neighborhood of North Minneapolis. In addition to photography, Lisa is a gifted classical singer who’s performed to critical acclaim both internationally and locally. Visit www.killeralto.com for more information.)

Artist's Statement - Lucy Rose Fischer
I'm an upside-down/backwards artist. I create stories in shimmering colors on hand-blown glass bowls, vases and plates. And I do it all in reverse.

My art career is also upside-down and backwards. I had a 25-year career as an award-winning researcher and writer, with a PhD in sociology and a specialty in the study of aging. I'm the author of three books and more than 90 published research articles and am a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America for “distinguished contributions to the field of aging.” I'm currently completing a book-in-pictures about the experience of growing old.

I don’t really stand on my head to create my glass art, but I do paint figures with their heads down and their feet up. With reverse-painting, the colors and designs that are in front are painted first.

I begin with sketches. For commissioned pieces, I work from photos or life. I often do dozens of sketches to capture the “essence” of many individuals in a group. When the sketches are good, I size them, flip each image and cut out “paper dolls” to place on the glass. Then I paint the figures backwards and upside down on the glass.

My art has been exhibited at numerous solo and juried exhibits, museums and galleries, including the American Craft Council Shows of Fine Craft in St Paul and Sarasota, Florida, the Minnesota Craft Council, the Stone Arch Art Festival, the Jewish Museum of Vienna, the Jewish Museum of Frankfort, Frank Stone Gallery, the University of Minnesota, the Catherine G. Murphy Gallery at the College of St. Catherine and Hopkins Center for the Arts.
