Families Moving Foward at Plymouth

Plymouth has joined with other congregations to work with Families Moving Forward to provide temporary shelter for up to eight families with children and for up to four weeks per year.

Our next dates to host Families Moving Forward are in May and July 2013. Please consider volunteering.

Families Moving Forward serves only families with children. Their greatest concern is for the damage homelessness causes in children. Resources are free for the families. Plymouth heard about this unique opportunity because of the merger of FMF and Plymouth Church Neighborhood Foundation.

We particularly need three coordinators to take responsibility for planning and recruiting for activities, child care and feeding our guests.

Volunteer job descriptions
Note: Each volunteer must attend an orientation.

Overnight Hosts (2 per night)
One male and one female, to arrive at Plymouth about 8 to 9 p.m. Sleep overnight. Be available for emergency. Assist Breakfast Host in putting out breakfast items, and helping families get on the morning bus. (Bus leaves about 7 a.m.).

Dinner Hosts (3-4 per night)
Provide the evening meal for guests.

Evening Greeter (1 each evening)
The Evening Greeter is at Jones Commons at 5 p.m., to welcome the guests as they arrive on the bus, and direct them to the Education Wing.  This person could also be a Dinner Host, or help with after-dinner clean-up.

Breakfast Host (1 each morning)
Put out breakfast food, assist families until they leave on the bus (bus arrives around 7 a.m.)  Overnight Hosts will also be able to help with this.

Activities Host  (1 each evening)
Plan and coordinate evening activities with the children (games, crafts, movies, park visits, etc.)

Back-up Hosts
To be called in at the last minute for other volunteers who can’t make it.

Overnight Emergency Hosts
Live near Plymouth, to be called if an emergency occurs. (Trip to a hospital, etc.)

Set-up / Take-down (3 each Sunday)
Prepare rooms on Sunday, take down the rooms the following Sunday.  Pick up airbeds from FMF, and return them.  Put equipment back in FMF storage closet at Plymouth.

Laundry Team
Launder sheets and pillow cases at the end of the week.

Lunch Team
Provide bread, cold cuts, cheese, peanuts, snacks, etc., makings for lunches that each family prepares in the evening, for their lunch the next day. Restock during the week, as needed.
