Benevolence Guidelines

In our oversight of the congregation’s benevolence, the Committee will give priority to

• The social action ministries of Plymouth Church
• Agencies associated with Outreach or Global Connections working groups will be given priority if they apply, on time.
• The projects identified by the ministerial staff as part of Plymouth’s core work
• The projects of Plymouth’s Pilgrim Fellowship (PF) youth group
• Organizations and projects where Plymouth members volunteer and/or partner in a meaningful way
  • Once Plymouth members are no longer directly involved with an organization or project, the Benevolence Committee is free to cease funding that organization or project at any time, at their discretion

We will give second tier priority to projects or organizations that

• Have as their goal the improvement of the material or social or spiritual well-being of their clients in south central Minneapolis (Plymouth’s neighborhood)
• Address core issues of poverty, homelessness, education, inclusiveness, environment
• Have a record/history of assisting the needy of our community

We will give a third-tier priority to projects or organizations that

• Are working with Plymouth partners in other parts of the world
• Are facing crisis in their financial ability to assist their clients

When an agency applies for the first time, the Benevolence Committee will, if we approve funding of that agency, grant a maximum of $1000 for the initial year, regardless of the amount requested. We reserve the right to make exceptions to this policy in special circumstances.

The Committee never has enough funds to meet all of the requests that come to it, nor even all of the requests that would meet the criteria above. When the Committee members deliberate and decide, we look for a balance in our giving that reflects Plymouth’s commonality of values and our diversity of interests.
