Values-Based
Estate Planning

Estate Planning is a look into the future. It may be simply preparing for retirement or it may be as complicated as planning how to pass on a family business. Husbands and wives provide for each other; parents and grandparents plan college savings for their children and grandchildren. While we cannot know the future with any certainty, we prepare as best we can.

Planning begins with the resources we have and those we can expect to have and applies them to a later time. Yet, planning is about more than resources; it is about values. If we value education, we will arrange for college savings plans. If we enjoy travel, we will include it in our retirement savings plans. Before beginning the necessary task of listing all of our assets, it is a good idea to reflect on the things and persons that are of importance to us.

Ask yourself:

How do you spend your time?

What goals do you have for you and your family?

Who or what has played an important role in your life? Can you still thank them?

What are your hopes for the future of the world?

Do you wish to leave a personal legacy?

Questions like these will inform the many financial planning options available to you.

Other Planning Instruments

In addition to the making financial plans, it will be helpful to you and loved ones to have created a Health Care Directive for life-threatening emergencies and a Durable Power of Attorney to manage your financial affairs if you become incapacitated. You may want to also consider whether you wish to be an organ donor and take the necessary steps to make that known.
