Empire and Economics: The Difference Religion Makes
Joerg Rieger

[MP3] recording of the talk
Empire and economics have deeply shaped not only the world but also religion. The good news is that they have never been able to take over completely. Progressive Christian theologian Rieger will explore how religion has continued to provide alternatives in the midst of pressure and continues to do so today.

Joerg Rieger is Wendland-Cook Professor of Constructive Theology at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University. His work seeks to bring together theology and the struggles for justice and liberation that mark our age. He is the author of numerous books, most recently Traveling (2011), Globalization and Theology (2010), No Rising Tide: Theology, Economics, and the Future (2009), Beyond the Spirit of Empire: Theology and Politics in a New Key (co-authored with Jung MoSung and Néstor Miguez, 2009), and Christ and Empire: From Paul to Postcolonial Times (2007, German and Portuguese translations). Rieger has lectured nationally and internationally, including in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Senegal, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, England, Russia, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico. He is on the steering committee of Jobs with Justice in North Texas and is co-founder of the Workers’ Rights Board in the Dallas area.
