Adult Forum, Jan. 8

From Fundamentalist to Progressive Christian
Lear deBessonet

What do Fundamentalist Christianity, Lincoln Center Theater, homelessness, social justice and Minneapolis have in common? Join us for the kick-off of the Winter Adult Forum series to find out.

New York–based theater director Lear deBessonet will share her personal journey from fundamentalist to progressive Christianity and how it has influenced her work as an artist. She will share her experiences creating theater in many different contexts, from Lincoln Center Theatre to her collaboration with a church and homeless shelter, Broad Street Ministry in Philadelphia, and how a mandate to pursue social justice through her work came out of a changing understanding of the life of Christ.

Come join us for an examination of lived theology and a discussion of how we can engage the larger possibility of faith, social justice and the arts.

Lear deBessonet has created large-scale theatrical events pairing artistic excellence with community Lear deBessonetorganizing in New York, Philadelphia, San Diego, Kazakhstan and Cambodia. Her original works have been produced by Lincoln Center Theater, the Old Globe Theatre, the Intiman Theatre and Performance Space 122. She was named one of Time Out New York’s “25 People to Watch” and has acted as a visiting professor at Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. She has an ongoing relationship with Ten Thousand Things in Minneapolis, where she directed My Fair Lady and is currently directing a production of As You Like It that will tour to prisons, homeless shelters, and community centers.
