April 22
A Sea Change

12:15 p.m., Nancy Baltins Room
Discussion follows with Jim Lenfestey
Co-sponsored with Caring for Creation

On Sunday, April 22, Earth Day, Plymouth’s Caring for Creation committee presents the important documentary, A Sea Change. This beautiful and informative feature-length documentary raises the disturbing question: Will climate change lead to oceans without fish?

A Sea Change follows the journey of retired history teacher Sven Huseby on his quest to discover what is happening to the world’s oceans. After reading Elizabeth Kolbert’s The Darkening Sea, Sven decides to learn more about the rising acidity of the oceans and what this “sea change” bodes for mankind. His quest takes him to Alaska, California, Washington, and Norway as he uncovers a worldwide crisis few are aware of: The acidity of the oceans is increasing, by nearly 30 per cent so far in the industrial era.

Speaking with oceanographers, marine biologists, climatologists, and artists, Sven discovers that global warming is only half the story of the environmental crisis caused by rising carbon emissions and poor land use. Excess carbon dioxide dissolves in the oceans (and lakes), changing water chemistry. The more acidic water makes it difficult for tiny creatures at the bottom of the  ocean’s food web to form their shells. The effects could work their way up to the fish one billion people depend upon for their major source of protein.

An essential companion piece to An Inconvenient Truth, A Sea Change debuted in March 2009 to a standing-room only record audience at the Smithsonian Museum, and a standing ovation.  Since then, the film has screened at festivals in North America, Europe, and Latin America, garnering multiple awards.

A discussion will follow the screening, led by Jim Lenfestey.
