Journey to a Dakota Past
Diane Wilson

Audio [MP3] of her talk.

Particularly relevant in light of commemorations of the U.S.-Dakota conflict 150 years ago, award-winning author Diane Wilson invites all to a conversation about her lifelong journey to reconnect with her family’s Dakota identity. Drawing from her memoir Spirit Car: Journey to a Dakota Past—winner of a 2006 Minnesota Book Award—Wilson shares family stories that offer insight into the turbulent history between American Indians and non-Natives.

Speaking about challenging issues with compassion and clarity, Wilson’s presentation will deepen our understanding of this legacy, as well as the importance of listening with our hearts.

Co-sponsored by Plymouth American Indian Initiative.

Diane Wilson is currently the Executive Director for Dream of Wild Health, a nonprofit farm in Hugo, Minn., that helps Native people reconnect with traditional foods and medicines. Her most recent book of creative nonfiction, Beloved Child: A Dakota Way of Life (Borealis Books, 2011), focuses on transforming historical trauma into a better way of life for our children. Her work has been featured in many anthologies, including American Tensions (New Village Press). She has received awards from the Minnesota State Arts Board, the Jerome Foundation and the East Central Regional Arts Council. Spirit Car was recently selected for the One Minneapolis One Read program.
