Book Study: The Third Reconstruction by Peniel Joseph

Two sessions:

  • Tuesday mornings, Oct 24–Nov 14, 10:00–11:30 a.m.

  • Thursday evenings, Oct 26–Nov 16, 6:30–8:00 p.m.

Much of what we are experiencing today in the political arena is not new to the United States. The benefit of knowing our history is not only understanding what’s happening today but also helping us work to overcome it. From the author: “The white riot of January 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol Building is impossible to understand without reference to earlier, yet strikingly similar, efforts during the First Reconstruction period. In both cases, there were attempts to violently overthrow democratically held elections won with the aid of Black voters.” (Peniel E. Joseph, pp. 14–15)
