Community Superheroes! Join us June 24th-28th for a week of high flying fun. Register here.
Campers will learn about their own talents and powers to create a realistic superhero persona, and determine how their special skills can make a difference in their communities. We will also learn from people in our own community who have incredible abilities, and they will share with us how they are improving the world. We will even use science (and maybe a little magic) to try some cool superhero tricks of our own–maybe we can turn something invisible, or make an object levitate!
All participants (full or half day) will have a unique opportunity to work with a woman who is a superhero in her own community of Woodlawn, Alabama, Lillis Taylor. Lillis is a quilter, fabric artist, and Executive Director of the nonprofit Bib & Tucker. As part of our camp, Ms. Taylor will be spending several days with our kids, helping them create a collaborative piece of fiber art, to be displayed at Plymouth Church. Participants who choose the full day session will also have opportunities in the afternoon to work on a smaller fabric project with Lillis, that they will be able to take home with them. Full day campers will also have other afternoon class options, including gardening, cooking, chess, mosaic art, and more! More information about afternoon classes will be coming in the next few weeks.
Lillis Taylor is coming to Peace Camp as part of a collaboration between our Children and Youth programming, the Plymouth Board of Fine Arts, and the Minnesota Contemporary Quilters (a member organization of the Minnesota Textile Center). In addition to her residency with us during Peace Camp, we are excited to be co-hosting a special quilt exhibit in the Howard Conn Gallery June through August. The March Quilts will be on loan from Bib and Tucker Sew-Op which creates community quilts on civil rights and humanitarian causes.
On Friday June 28th at 3:30pm, we will have our end of camp celebration, where the children and young people will share with us what they have created over the week. We will also have a gallery reception for The March Quilts with Ms. Taylor, that will begin at 4pm, immediately following our closing program.
