Re-imagining Community Safety Town Hall

April 4 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

This event will be held in person.

Plymouth Congregation’s Re-imagining Community Safety Committee will be co-hosting a meeting featuring Commissioner of Community Safety Todd Barnette and Director of Neighborhood Safety Luana Nelson-Brown. Our co-host for the event is the League of Women Voters of Minneapolis.

As many of you know, both the Minnesota Department of Human Rights and the U.S. Department of Justice have been investigating the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) and have found evidence of human rights abuses and systemic racism in the MPD. In March of 2023, the Minnesota Department of Human Rights and the City of Minneapolis signed a court enforceable Settlement Agreement that mandates major changes in the way the MPD operates.

Even before signing the Settlement Agreement, the city created a new position for Commissioner of Community Safety, with all community safety departments coordinated by and reporting to the new Commissioner: Police, Fire, 911, Emergency Management, and Neighborhood Safety (formerly Office of Violence Prevention). The Commissioner is Todd Barnette, former Chief Judge in Hennepin County

Commissioner Barnette and Director Luana Nelson-Brown will discuss their work and plans to continue improving community safety in our city. This will be followed by a Q & A.
