“The Color of Law”; talk by Richard Rothstein

March 23 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

- $5

The Racial Justice Initiative invited Richard Rothstein to speak Monday, March 23, at 7 p.m. Rothstein is the author of The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How our Government Segregated America. The Color of Law details a powerful and disturbing history of governmental efforts to impose housing segregation: racially explicit policies at the federal, state and local governmental levels that gave rise to and reinforced segregation in every metropolitan area of our country, a legacy that we live with today. Government agencies used public housing to clear mixed neighborhoods and create segregated ones. Governments built highways as buffers to keep the races apart. Federal mortgage insurance ushered in an era of suburbanization on the condition that developers keep blacks out.
Rothstein is currently a Senior Fellow at the Haas Institute at UC Berkeley School of Law and is an Emeritus Senior Fellow of the Thurgood Marshall Institute at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. His talk is sponsored by Plymouth Church, in collaboration with Hennepin History Museum and Alliance Housing.
