SUMMARY:Embroideries in Context
DESCRIPTION:Lyndel King\, director of the Weisman Art Museum (U of Minnesota) joins us for an Embroideries in Context discussion (third of four) in Guild Hall. These Embroideries in Context will be held January 13 & 27\, February 24\, and March 17. Facilitiator Annette Atkins is Professor Emerita of History at St. John’s University and College of St. Benedict\, author of four books (including Creating Minnesota\, Minnesota Historical Society). \n

SUMMARY:Maitri Wisdom Energies
DESCRIPTION:We are very excited to offer an exciting course in the field of Contemplation and Energy Healing Work: The Five Wisdom ( or Maitri—meaning loving kindness) Energy Practice. Based upon Chinese and Tibetan Five element theory and contemplative (mindfulness) psychology\, The Five Wisdom teaching describes five personality types\, each arising from a unique elemental energy. Unlike other personality style theories\, the Five Wisdom Practice joins an experiential component\, involving a meditation practice in specially designed meditation rooms\, to the theoretical framework to enhance the experience of each energy. This practice is extremely useful for personal exploration and growth and healing and dovetails beautifully with our Christian life and faith. \nThe course will consist of classroom work\, done together\, and also personal practice in the maitri rooms. The course will run from Jan 7 to May 6. We will spend three weeks on each Wisdom (Energy). Classes will be Monday nights from 6:30 to 8:00 and on select Thursdays. You do not have to attend every class session to take the course. Just come to as many as you can during each three week block of classes to learn about the energy and share your meditation experience. During each three-week block\, the maitri room for that energy will be available for personal practice times (they will be available during all church hours) and you will sign up for a time that is good for you. Each personal practice session is 45 minutes. The Thursday class dates are: Jan 10\, Jan 31\, Feb 21\, March 21\, April 4. These classes will be from 12:00—1:30 p.m. \nQuestions? Contact Dan Wolpert\, danw@plymouth.org or 612/977-1274 \n6:30–8:00 p.m.\, Mondays\, Jan. 7–May 6\, 2019 [Additional Thursday meetings will be added.] \nNo charge; no registration. \n

SUMMARY:The Intersection of Joy and Grief: Honoring Each
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by grief expert Ted Bowman: Either/or ways of seeing and responding to events and feelings can compromise both the either and the or. There will be intersecting experiences of joy and grief. Rather than push one away\, a both/and approach acknowledges overlaps of feelings and experiences. In this session\, ways of honestly honoring one’s joy and one’s grief will be asserted and discussed using personal and family vignettes. There also will be table discussions after a presentation by Mr. Bowman. Ted Bowman’s current career emphasis is on aiding people in utilizing their strengths and the resources of others in facing change and transition. \n12:15 p.m.\, Sunday\, March 3 (Bowman also presents at the March 3 Sunday Forum\, at 10 a.m.) \nFree; no registration required \n

SUMMARY:Relationship as Spiritual Practice
DESCRIPTION:Relationship as Spiritual Practice: Foundation of Non-Violent Communication is led by expert Yvette Erasmus. Being in relationship is a delicate balance of physical\, emotional\, psychological and spiritual factors. Learning how to truly love one another—instead of turning on one another—is one of the great spiritual goals of our times. Join us to explore the importance of things like the quality of your presence\, moment to moment awareness\, the state of consciousness you are speaking from and the energy that informs your (un)skillful words as you connect with those you love. \nWe will explore how foundational tools of Marshall Rosenberg’s nonviolent communication model can provide a powerful “how to” framework as we all practice loving one another. \n6:30–9:00 p.m.\, March 8; 9:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.\, March 9 \n$125 for one person; $200 for two people; please register. \n

SUMMARY:Film Club: "Locked in a Box"
DESCRIPTION:Locked in a Box is an award-winning short documentary that follows the stories of individuals held in the U.S. Immigration detention system\, and those who visit them. The film traces the lives of individuals who fled their homelands in search of safety and freedom\, only to end up in U.S. prisons under a mandatory bed quota system run by Immigration Customs & Enforcement (ICE). Since the 1990s\, there has been a massive expansion of the immigration detention system\, with up to 34\,000 immigrants in detention on any given day in approximately 200 different facilities\, many of which are for-profit prisons. Locked in a Box helps strip away the political rhetoric to see the human cost of detention. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Letters to All of Us—Baldwin and Coates
DESCRIPTION:Letters to All of Us—James Baldwin’s “The Fire Next Time” and Ta-Nehisi Coates’ “Between the World and Me”; facilitated by Joan Thompson and Seth Patterson \nTa-Nehisi Coates cites James Baldwin’s “The Fire Next Time” as an influence on “Between the World and Me.” Both books are letters\, Coates’ to his son and Baldwin’s to his nephew\, but both have a larger audience. Join Seth Patterson to discuss questions such as: What is similar and different in the experiences the two books written 52 years apart describe? What challenges do these writers present to readers? How do the books relate to current events and to Plymouth’s work on racial justice? \nJoan Thompson\, Ph.D.\, is a retired American Literature and Composition Professor with a focus on American Multicultural Literature. Seth Patterson\, MFA & MDiv\, is Director of Spiritual Formation and Theater; liaison to the Racial Justice Initiative.\n1:00–2:30 p.m.\, Thursdays\, March 14—April 11. Free; please register. \n

SUMMARY:Ed Bok Lee launches "Mitochondrial Night"
DESCRIPTION:FREE EVENT!\nJoin us for the book launch of Ed Bok Lee’s latest\, Mitochondrial Night\, a collection that traces paths through time\, genealogy and geography. Taking mitochondrial DNA as his guide\, Lee explores familial and national legacies—the trait of an ancestor appears in the face of a newborn\, and in her cry generations of women’s voices echo. Using lush\, exact imagery\, whether about the corner bar or an invasion in medieval Korea\, Lee is a careful observer\, tracking and documenting the way that seemingly small moments can lead to larger insights. \nPoets Donte Collins and Saymoukda Duangphouxay Vongsay will help to kick off the celebration! \nThis event\, free and open to the public\, is co-sponsored by Literary Witnesses\, Rain Taxi Review of Books and Korean Quarterly. Reception to follow\, with music by DJ NAK. We hope to see you there! More info here: http://www.raintaxi.com/ed-bok-lee/.

SUMMARY:The Opioid Crisis (and ways to address it)
DESCRIPTION:The Opioid Crisis: Perspectives from the medical front lines. This presentation will focus on the epidemic of opioid-related death and disability\, a public health crisis with complex social roots. The emergency health system is typically the first\, sometimes the only\, and all-too-often the last point of contact for patients affected by this epidemic. The presentation will cover the origin of the crisis\, a clinician’s perspective on the care of these patients and some novel programs to address opioid dependence. \nTravis Olives\, MD\, MPH\, MEd\, is an emergency physician at Hennepin Healthcare\, a medical toxicologist at the Minnesota Poison Control System and an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Minnesota. In addition to his clinical practice and toxicology research\, he conducts research on the social and economic factors influencing emergency care. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Maitri\, April 4
DESCRIPTION:Maitri Five-Wisdom Energies\, offered by Daniel Wolpert\, Interim Minister6:30–8:00 p.m.\, Mondays\, Jan. 7–May 6\, 2019 (no class Jan. 21 or April 21); plus 12 noon to 1:30 p.m.\, on these Thursdays: Jan. 10\, Jan. 31\, Feb. 21\, March 21 and April 4. Room 205. Free; no registration required. \nWe are very excited to offer a course in the field of Contemplation and Energy Healing Work: The Five Wisdom (or Maitri\, meaning “loving kindness”) Energy Practice. You do not have to attend every class session to take the course: Just come to as many as you can during each three week block of classes to learn about the energy and share your meditation  experience. During each three week block\, the maitri room for that energy will be available for 45-minute personal practice times. \n
