Campus Task Force 2.0

Plymouth’s Vision for the Future

The Campus Task Force 2.0 invites everyone to participate in spiritual conversations about the future of Plymouth. What is God calling us to be in this building, in this neighborhood, in this moment in time? How might we live more deeply into the purposes of the church, and how can we—together and in new ways—imagine and create a bold future and a shared, actionable vision?

Plymouth, like churches everywhere, is facing existential questions about sustainability in a society that is de-emphasizing the importance of church. We also recognize a lack of authentic and trusting relationships with our neighbors. We believe that these two topics are best addressed together.

As our congregation seeks to embody the radical love and justice found in the life, teaching, and spirit of Jesus, we will come together for conversations grounded in love and humility. These conversations need all of us to imagine new ways of working, new pathways, new relationships. What is possible through spiritual growth and relationships based on covenant with each other and those outside our walls?

Campus Task Force 2.0

2024–2025 Church Year

The Deacons-sponsored Campus Task Force 2.0 invites you to join continuing spiritual conversations about the future of Plymouth Congregational Church and its relevance in the world. Our three central questions are: What is God calling Plymouth to be in this building, in this neighborhood, at this moment in time? How might we live more deeply into the Purposes of the Church? How can we—together and in new ways—imagine and create a bold future and a shared, actionable vision?

We want to be intentional about coming together for conversations grounded in love, humility, joy and hope. These conversations need all of us to imagine new ways of working, new pathways, new relationships. What is possible through spiritual growth and relationships based on covenant with each other and those outside our walls?

Goals of the Campus Task Force

  • Create a thriving, impactful church for all that reflects the life and teachings of Jesus.
  • Create an environment for individual and collective spiritual growth to occur.
  • Foster an environment that encourages authentic relationships with our neighbors.
  • Create a sense of curiosity for our work within Plymouth.
  • Ground our work in love for ourselves, our Plymouth community and our neighbors.

Imagining Plymouth’s Future

  • We seek transformation that will occur, in part, through building relationships with our neighbors.
  • The former way: We had impact when we used our power and privilege. A new way: We have impact when we are in relationship with our neighbors and doing good with, not for. Being in relationship is about sharing power.
  • If we lean into this work, we cannot begin to imagine what we can do, what’s possible.
  • Our discussions will address our questions about the relevance of our church in the world in concert with our relationships with our neighbors. We must trust that building relationships will lead us to the right place.
  • These discussions will not always be comfortable. They will require humility, listening and the ability to reside in a place of ambiguity.

History of the Campus Task Force

The first Campus Task Force met from January 2022 to January 2023. While it started as a group focused on the operations issues of our building, the work evolved to be a heart-based spiritual process of loving our neighbors. The Task Force concluded that its work was a path to living out the Purposes of the Church, and that our church could use its abundance to be a catalyst for change in the community and to deepen Plymouth’s long and deep commitment to addressing systemic injustices in the world. Its recommendations were bold statements of what is possible through spiritual growth and relationships based on covenant with each other and with those outside our walls.

Plymouth’s mission states that “We seek to embody the radical love and justice found in the life, teachings and spirit of Jesus.” So, what does that mean in this building, in this neighborhood, in this moment in time?

How we move forward is important. This is not a bricks and mortar discussion. It is a conversation about what God is calling each of us to do within, among and beyond, in this moment and place.

Lead Minister DeWayne Davis says this about the Campus Task Force initiative: “Our future depends on how we respond now. It will take inspiration and participation. The way forward is to throw open our doors. And if we do, we cannot begin to imagine what we might do together. But this requires trust—in each other, in these conversations and, most of all, in God.”

These conversations, grounded in the Purposes of the Church, will require humility, listening and the ability to reside in a place of ambiguity.

We invite you to participate in the conversations.
