April Civic Buzz: Training for Ethical Police Practices
Speaker: Commander Kris Brown – Training Division, Mpls Police Dept.
Public concern about law enforcement training and practices has grown, especially after witnessing federal agents use excessive force, conduct dangerous vehicle pursuits, make aggressive stops and arrests, and engage in crowd control tactics that felt both alarming and unlawful. These moments have prompted an important question: What does ethical law enforcement look like, and how is the Minneapolis Police Department preparing both new and veteran officers to meet the standards of non‑discriminatory policing outlined in the Settlement Agreement?
Commander Kris Brown, a 26‑year MPD veteran who now leads the department’s Training Division, will join us to explore these issues and discuss how MPD is working to build a more accountable and community‑centered approach to policing.
This event is co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters Minneapolis and Plymouth’s ReImagining Community Safety Committee (RiCS).
What We Are Doing
We engage with other community members and public officials to promote constitutional, non-discriminatory policing as required by the Minnesota Department of Human Rights and the U.S. Department of Justice. We are watching, we expect results, and we are not going away.
Who We Are
Members of the Reimagining Community Safety (RiCS) group at Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis approach reforming public safety from the perspective of our faith community’s values and responsibilities. We strive to be allies with overpoliced and underprotected communities at the intersection of justice, equity, and community safety.
What We Seek & Why
We seek compassionate, impartial policing by all officers in all encounters with all individuals of all backgrounds. We support transformative changes to police accountability, which is central to all police reform measures in the City of Minneapolis.
How To Get Involved
We monitor reform efforts and provide input to public officials, meeting each month virtually to plan how to take action. Our impact increases as our group grows.
