Whether you wandered in one Sunday, found us through a friend, or have been attending for months and are finally ready to learn more — welcome. You don’t need to have it figured out to be here. Plymouth is a community that makes room for questions, doubt, and people at every stage of their journey.

There is no pressure to become a member. Many people find a home at Plymouth and participate fully without ever formally joining. But if membership is something you’re curious about, we’d love to tell you what it means here.


What Membership Means at Plymouth

Membership at Plymouth is not about belief. We have no creed, no doctrine you must affirm, no test you must pass. Membership is a covenant — a voluntary commitment to walk with this community, to contribute to its life, and to hold yourself accountable to its shared values.

Plymouth is a Congregational church, which means the members govern it. Elected lay leaders — Deacons, the Leadership Council, and Boards — shape the direction of the church. Becoming a member means becoming part of that shared responsibility.

It also means belonging. It means your name is known here.

We offer a series of informal classes for anyone curious about Plymouth — whether you’re considering membership or simply want to understand what this community is about.


The series typically runs in the spring and includes four sessions:


  1. Welcome & Conversation — An informal evening gathering to meet others who are curious about Plymouth, connect with current members and staff, and ask any questions you have.
  2. History of Plymouth and Looking Forward — Where we’ve been and where we’re headed.
  3. Connecting to Community — How to find your people and your place at Plymouth.
  4. Congregationalism and a Covenant Community  — What it means to be part of a church governed by its members.


The series concludes with New Member Sunday, when those who choose to formally join are welcomed into the congregation.

Plymouth's confirmands arrive with questions, which is the right way to arrive. Confirmation here is a season of honest inquiry — scripture read closely, Plymouth's history examined, inherited beliefs held up to the light — walked alongside adult guides from the congregation. Doubt is not a failure of the process; it is the process. At the end, each student decides for themselves whether to join. Both answers are honored.
